Institutional Note: Academic Disclaimer: Grading standards and conversions vary across institutions and credential evaluators.

Scale: Unweighted 4.0 (A=4.0, A-=3.7, B+=3.3…). P/NP, W, I grades are excluded. GPA = Σ(grade point × credits) / Σ credits.

Enter Quarter 1-4 grades as courses; GPA = Σ(points×units)/Σunits.

How to use

  1. 1Enter grades and units for each of the four quarters (or fewer if the year isn't complete).
  2. 2Include all graded coursework — quarter units function like semester credits in the formula.
  3. 3See your quarter-by-quarter GPA and the cumulative GPA for the academic year.

Formula

GPA = Σ (grade point × units) / Σ units

Each quarter contributes quality points = grade point × units. The year cumulative GPA is the sum of all quality points divided by the sum of all units across quarters. Note that quarter units convert to semester credits at a 2:3 ratio when combining records.

Examples

Q1: 3.4 (12u), Q2: 3.6 (12u), Q3: 3.5 (12u), Q4: 3.8 (12u)

QP: 40.8 + 43.2 + 42.0 + 45.6 = 171.6 ÷ 48.

Year GPA 3.575

About

The Quarter System GPA Calculator is built for schools that divide the academic year into four quarters instead of two semesters. Enter grades and units for each quarter, and the calculator produces per-quarter GPAs plus the cumulative average for the year. Quarter units are used directly in the credit-weighted formula, so the math matches what your institution reports. Students at quarter-system colleges and universities use this tool to track term-by-term progress and to prepare records for transfer, where quarter units are commonly converted to semester credits at a two-thirds ratio.

Frequently asked questions

Are quarter units the same as credits?
They function the same way in the GPA formula, but quarter units convert to semester credits at two-thirds (e.g., 3 quarter units = 2 semester credits).
How do I convert my quarter GPA to a semester GPA?
GPA itself is an average, so it transfers directly. Only the credit counts change when converting between quarter and semester systems.
