Formula: Final = Σ(score × weight /100), normalized if weights ≠100. Letters: A+97 A93 A-90 B+87 B83 B-80 C+77 C73 C-70 D+67 D63 D-60.
How to use
- 1Enter your current grade in the class as a percentage.
- 2Enter the weight of the final exam (e.g., 30% of your total grade).
- 3Enter your target grade, and the calculator shows the exact score needed on the final to reach it.
Formula
Required final score = (Target − Current × (1 − final weight)) ÷ final weightYour current grade already applies to the weight of everything completed so far, which is (100% − final weight). Solving for the final exam score gives the minimum percentage you must earn. If the result is above 100, the target is unreachable; if below 0, you've already secured it.
Examples
Current 88, final worth 25%, target 90
Required = (90 − 88 × 0.75) ÷ 0.25 → (90 − 66) ÷ 0.25 = 96.
Need 96% on the final
Current 78, final worth 30%, target 85
Required = (85 − 78 × 0.70) ÷ 0.30 → (85 − 54.6) ÷ 0.30.
Need 101.3% — unreachable
About
The Final Grade Calculator tells you exactly what percentage you need on a final exam to reach your target course grade. Enter your current grade, the weight of the final, and your goal, and the calculator solves the weighted-average equation for the required exam score. This is one of the most useful academic planning tools during exam season. Students use it to see whether a target is realistic, how much breathing room a strong current grade provides, and how heavily a heavy final is weighting their outcome.
Frequently asked questions
What if the required score is over 100?
The target is unreachable based on your current grade and the final's weight. Consider extra credit or lower your target.
What if my teacher hasn't returned everything yet?
Estimate your current grade from graded work. The result is only as accurate as the estimate of your current standing.
