Custom grading scales allow educators and students to match institutional syllabi and international grading tiers.

How to use

  1. 1Enter the total number of questions on the assessment.
  2. 2Enter how many were answered correctly (or incorrectly).
  3. 3See the percentage score, the letter grade, and the approximate GPA on a 4.0 scale.

Formula

Percentage = correct ÷ total × 100 • Letter and GPA from standard US scale

Once the percentage is computed, it is mapped to a letter grade (e.g., 90+ = A) and to the 4.0 GPA scale commonly used in US schools. Combined output makes this a convenient all-in-one grading reference.

Examples

20 questions, 17 correct

17 ÷ 20 × 100 = 85% → B → ≈ 3.0 GPA.

85% — B • 3.0

35 questions, 33 correct

33 ÷ 35 × 100 = 94.3% → A → ≈ 4.0 GPA.

94.3% — A • 4.0

About

The Grading Scale Calculator converts a raw count of correct answers on a test or assignment into a percentage, letter grade, and approximate 4.0 GPA in one step. Enter the total number of questions and your correct count, and the calculator applies the standard US grading scale to derive all three outputs. This makes it a convenient reference for quick test scoring and for estimating how an individual grade translates to GPA terms. Parents and students use it to interpret assignment scores, while teachers can use it as a lightweight alternative to a full EZ grader chart.

Frequently asked questions

How is the letter scale defined?
Standard US boundaries: A 90+, B 80+, C 70+, D 60+, F below 60. Your school may differ slightly.
How is the GPA estimate calculated?
By mapping the letter grade to the 4.0 scale (A = 4.0, B = 3.0, etc.). It approximates a single grade, not a course GPA.
